According to report last June, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers was interested in re-signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.
Rodgers signed the 20-year-old to the Reds team back in 2015 but nine months after the Northern manager was shown the axe, Gomez sustained an injury which rendered him unfit for 15 months
Until recently, he has returned to action at Anfield since January 2017, but his chances of playing first team football next season looks slim and Celtic should try to sign a loan deal for him this summer.
Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered another beautiful performance for Liverpool on Tuesday night and, with Nathaniel Clyne now back to match fitness after a lengthy layoff, Gomez – who picked up an injury on international duty with England – will arguably be Jurgen Klopp’s third-choice for the right back position next season
Speaking to This is Anfield in 2015, Rodgers said: “He’s a very, very good personality to play at this level, he’s very humble. He knows he’s still got a lot to learn, but we know we’ve got an outstanding talent.”
Having played 19 Premier League games this season, he has come too far and made too much progress to go back being a fringe player and it just so happens that Rodgers has a vacant position he could fill at Parkhead.
Mikael Lustig has had a miserable run this season and the Hoops manager’s decision to send Anthony Ralston out on loan last month is a clear indication that Rodgers doesn’t yet trust him to become a regular starter.
Gomez, rated at £50 million, won’t be available on a full transfer, but he will need regular action time next season to aid his ongoing development, and a season-long loan at Celtic – who will likely be back to the Champions League again – could suit all parties involved.
