Dries Mertens continues to attract attention from top clubs particularly from Manchester United as he has maintained his incredible form of the previous season, and he will come at a bargain price.
Dries Merten has a €28 million release clause in his new deal with Napoli and remains a top target for the Red Devils, according to Napoli’s former sporting director Pierpaolo Marino.
United was said to be heavily interested in the attacker last season before he recommitted his future to the Serie A side in May after a sensational season.
The Belgium international’s contract has now been extended till 2020, but president Aurelio De Laurentiis has said the contract is inclusive of a release clause that can be activated by a foreign outfit.
Although Mertens is 30 years old, he has found the net seven times in seven Serie A games this season and Marino insists he can be snatched away from the Italian club at a reasonable price should Jose Mourinho’s side act on their interest.
“Manchester United are following Mertens very closely,” he told Tuttosport.
“He was an underestimated player until he played as a striker, now that he is a ‘real No.9’ he is kept under the eye of big clubs, because the €28 million clause a low price, even if he’s 30 years old.”
Napoli sits at the top of the Serie A table two points ahead of reigning champions Juventus with a perfect record so far, and Marino believes Maurizio Sarri’s side can claim the title this term.
“This could be the year of the Blues,” he said.”But not because Juve are weaker, but because Napoli have improved.”
