Manchester United fans have had a thrilling experience in the transfer window so far. But the Barcelona faithfuls have had a totally different experience. Apart from getting Lionel Messi to pen an extension, disappointment has been the highlight of summer. Top target Marco Verratti’s move from PSG looks to be at a dead end, leaving new coach Ernesto Valverde probing the transfer market for alternatives.
Topping the alternative list is Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera. The unassuming Spanish star was an unsung hero at Old Trafford last season and has become a fan favourite with his top performances.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Valverde is keen to reunite with Herrera with whom he had a working experience with during the midfielder’s time at Athletico Bilbao. Herrera moved from Bilbao to United in 2014 and had to struggle to find his feet, struggling to have an impact on the team’s squad play under Lois van Gaal.
Jose Mourinho coming in as the new manager though, has worked wonders for Herrera. Herrera soon become favored with Mourinho and soon became a constant feature on the playing sheet. He was one of the key players for Mourinho, helping his team claim the UEFA Europa League and win back a spot in the Champions League this season.
Valverde believes that the lure to play at the Nou Camp will be too strong for the Spanish international to resist. Herrera on the other hand has reportedly expressed his wish to remain a Red Devil. He is reportedly satisfied with his development Under Mourinho and is eager to build on the association.
The Red Devils are eager to tie Herrera down to a new contract and there have been some indications from the Player’s camp that Ander is willing to sign a long-term contract for the 20-time English Champions. As per a report from Daily Star, Manchester United have opened talks for a contract extension with the Spaniard and are ready to increase the player’s weekly wages to £175,000-a-week to ward off interest from Barcelona.
Herrera is one of the most under-rated midfielders in the Premier League as he showed last season that he can be a handful for any player. Old Trafford still buzzes with excitement at the way he tackled Eden Hazard by being his shadow for the entire game against Chelsea.
Like every other Spanish midfielder, Herrera too is technically refined, making him a perfect folly for Paul Pogba at United. With the arrival of Romelu Lukaku, United are wildly expected to break new grounds and commence a genuine contention for titles. For that to happen, Ander Herrera in the central park could be a major catalyst.
