Stefan de Vrij’s future could create a few problems for Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic given his previous links with Lazio.
At the wee stages of the January transfer window, the Sunday Post reported that Lazio was planning to make a move for Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic, but was waiting for summer to make an official bid for the Bosnian.
That was because Stefan de Vrij remained with the Serie A giants during the window ahead of a potential summer move, and now he appears to be inevitably heading for the exit doors at the end of this season.
Lazio’s sporting director Igli Tare has confirmed to Sport Mediaset that the club is no longer interested in offering for the Netherlands international, and he now looks set to make an exit in the summer unless something dramatically changes.
That news may put Celtic on red alert as it would seemingly suggest that Simunovic may once again become a transfer target for the Italian side at the end of the campaign.
Whether that will cause a headache or not for Brendan Rodgers is likely to divide opinion amongst the Celtic fan base. Simunovic has been out of form lately and his previous injury crisis has made him highly inconsistent.
However, he was impressive in the Europa League victory over Zenit St Petersburg last week, and Celtic is already in need of reinforcement at the back in the summer with Dedryck Boyata similarly out of form, and Jack Hendry and Kristoffer Ajer ideally a hope for the future.
